These two cards came out together today. Oddly enough, yesterday someone gifted me a hand-knit pair of gloves featuring a heron/crane type bird and I wondered if I would see such a bird next time I pulled cards. The way she stands with legs making a cross of 90° angles reminds me of the Hanged Man in tarot, poised in a vulnerable state. Comparing these two cards, we have Patience representing the cardinal cross (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) of decisive, pioneering energy and Dragonfly representing the mutable cross (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces) of fluctuating, chameleonic energy. What happens when they meet and cross over each other?
Standing in the fog, relying on senses other than sight, is uncomfortable for the parts of us that run on masculine energy—we desperately want to take action to resolve the situation into something that can be grasped, moved, forced. But that’s not always how change is made. Right now, Mars is being compelled to recede into the fog of its retrograde movement in Gemini until spring, when it moves into Cancer. This feels like blindness. Uncertainty.
Contradictions abound here. The Dragonfly, zooming back and forth over the river, prepares for the ingress of the fiery planet into the watery feminine of Cancer. This will be an outpouring of water, which we can read as Spirit, especially when we consider that Pluto moves into Aquarius at the same time. Aquarius is an air sign but we can think of it as a cloud, gathering moisture from one place (the deep well on the inside) and depositing it where it is needed (the overly active, masculine-dominated culture that currently reigns here on Earth). The result? A waterfall of new hope embodied by people who no longer require kings or priests or leaders, and who no longer build society by means of extracting maximum resources from the planet or others. A realignment of the most harmonious kind.
The number 9 is the number of the Void, of holy unity of all things beyond the boundaries of light and matter. The 9 behind the fog is a call to remembrance that long ago, we emerged from this unity to dance in the forest of time. The 3 of the dragonfly is vibrant and lively and curious about all the new ways we can possibly conceive of to live and breathe and move in this time-bound state. It needn’t be so oppressive. It needn’t be so dark and confusing. The fog will lift and the sun will shine and we will dance in the Earth in ways we can only dream.
